Your numbers are usually read before your face. That surprises people, and it stops being surprising the moment you understand how a production works: the sample garments already exist, the costume budget was agreed weeks ago, and the brief from the client says what they asked for. Your measurements decide whether you are physically possible for the job. Charm at the fitting will not close a zip.
Which is the whole argument for accuracy over flattery, and it is worth taking seriously, because the temptation to shave two centimetres off a waist is close to universal.
Everything on your card begins with this.How to take them
Use a soft cloth tape, not a rigid rule. Measure over underwear or close-fitting clothing and never over a jumper. Keep the tape level the whole way round, which mostly means checking that it has not ridden up at the back — that single error accounts for a good share of wrong numbers on beginner cards. Stand normally. Do not hold your breath, do not draw anything in, and do not pull the tape tight enough to compress.
Write every figure down in both centimetres and inches. Markets differ, and a card carrying both is readable everywhere without anyone having to convert it themselves.
Height
Barefoot, heels together, back flat against a wall, eyes forward, and somebody else making the mark. Measuring your own height is where almost all exaggeration enters the system. It is also the figure most likely to be checked in person, and being caught out by three centimetres on the first morning is a miserable way to begin a job.
Bust or chest
Around the fullest part, tape level, arms relaxed. On a male card the chest measurement sits under the armpits across the widest point. If you are wearing a bra, make it an unpadded one.
Waist
The narrowest part of the torso, typically above the navel and below the ribs. Lean sideways and the crease that appears is roughly your line. This is not where your trousers sit, which is lower, and confusing the two is why so many beginner waist figures are out by several centimetres.
Hips
Around the fullest part of the seat, feet together, tape level. Standing with your feet apart widens it. For a great deal of fashion work this is the number that settles the question of fit, so take it twice.
Inside leg
Crotch to floor, barefoot. Requested more often than beginners expect, particularly for anything involving trousers, tailoring or a uniform.
A size is a label, not a measurement
Clothing sizes vary wildly between countries and between brands inside the same country. Your card should carry real measurements as the primary data and the size as a convenience, and whenever you give a size you should say which system it belongs to. A dress size is a different number in Britain, Italy, France and the United States.
Shoe size has exactly the same problem and matters more than people expect, because footwear is frequently supplied by the production rather than brought by you. Give your usual size and name the system.

- Hair colour, and whether it is currently dyed.
- Eye colour.
- Visible tattoos and piercings, with rough placement. Covering them eats makeup time, and a production would much rather know now than at seven in the morning.
- Whether your hair is in a usable state or mid-transition.
None of these rule you out by default. Not declaring them is what causes the trouble.
Keep them current
Bodies change. Remeasure every three or four months, and straight away after any deliberate change in training, weight or hair. A card untouched for two years reads as abandoned, and some of the people filtering will skip it on that basis alone without ever telling you.
